Holcim US Recognized with NRMCA Concrete Innovations Award for Innovative Carbon Reduction Strategies
- ECOPactTM low carbon concrete used in concrete pavement studies by the National Road Research Alliance to better understand low-carbon material performance in interstates
Chicago, Ill., March 27 – Sustainable building solutions leader, Holcim US, was named a winner of a NRMCA Concrete Innovations Award for its participation in the Lower Carbon Content Concrete Pavement MnROAD project. Through a partnership with MnROAD, Holcim successfully demonstrated achievements in performance while lowering environmental impact through innovative carbon reduction strategies for concrete used in applications such as interstates and other infrastructure projects.
The winning project included four low carbon content concrete pavement studies between 2021 and 2024, with the purpose of gathering structural response and performance data based on test sections that were subject to live interstate traffic. Holcim’s innovative ECOPact ready-mix concrete and technical expertise were critical during the project to demonstrate performance while also achieving a low Global Warming Potential.
“We thank NRMCA for honoring us with this award and MnROAD and the Slag Cement Association for their partnership on this project,” said Randy Gaworski, SVP and General Manager of the North Central Region at Holcim US. “Our ECOPact low-carbon concrete mix included Portland-limestone cement, slag cement, fly ash and other materials to reduce total cementitious materials, achieving a mix with less than 50% clinker content. This innovative approach demonstrates the ability to reduce carbon content in construction materials with no compromise on performance.”
ECOPact low-carbon concrete is the company’s broadest range of low-carbon concrete mixes for high-performing, sustainable and circular construction. These mixes were designed to reduce the GWP by at least 30% compared to standard concrete.
Holcim was also nominated for two additional projects – the Delaware Memorial Bridge Overlay Rehabilitation and the Babcock Street Outfall Project. Both projects relied on Holcim’s innovative mix designs to navigate unique circumstances. The Delaware Memorial Bridge project leveraged Holcim’s Ductal Ultra High Performance Concrete to address accelerated deterioration, ultimately preserving the 75-year old bridge and gaining 40 years of life extension. The Babcock Street Outfall project leveraged Holcim’s Ultra-Lightweight Self Consolidating Agileflow to stop environmental contamination into the Buffalo River.
